Since 2005, WDC-NA has amazed people with the wonder of whales and dolphins. Through education, outreach, science, and policy, WDC inspires global and individual action to protect them. Whales have a very busy job as the ocean’s farmers, bringing nutrients to a floating forest which gives us half our oxygen, store carbon, and supports fish stocks. A healthy planet needs a healthy ocean, and a healthy ocean needs whales. By saving whales, we are saving the world.
In 2021, WDC became federally authorized to respond to stranded marine mammals through an agreement as part of the Greater Atlantic Regional Marine Mammal Stranding Network. As of December 2025, our Marine Animal Rescue and Response area expanded to include around 100 miles of additional coastline and 34 harbor islands and peninsulas in Boston Harbor.
This expansion brings our stranding region to a total of ~300 miles of coastline from Revere to Plymouth, MA. This expansion helps to close a critical gap in stranding coverage, ensuring rapid response for stranded marine mammals. Our MARR team has been hard at work meeting with town and state officials, putting up informational flyers, and recruiting volunteers in our new response region to prepare for the expansion.
WDC-NA is constantly engaged with local communities through education and outreach events. Our education programs offer immersive learning experiences that embolden the next generation of ocean stewards and foster ocean literacy. WDC offers highly adaptive programs, with financial flexibility, for kindergarten through college classrooms and public outreach events.
Delilah, our life-sized inflatable North Atlantic right whale, is a fan favorite, teaching the anatomy of the critically endangered species from the inside. Our other programs include topics such as watersheds, marine ecosystems, whale identification, and on-demand fishing gear.
On average, our education programs reach around 10,000 people annually, focusing on underserved communities. We recognize that the field of marine mammal conservation lacks certain voices due, in part, to a lack of early education about how the ocean benefits all of us.
WDC-NA is dedicated to knowledge sharing, transparency, collaboration, and improving access to the ocean conservation field. We do this through our communications, education and outreach program, paid internship program, and by working in tandem with other conservation groups.
