Keeping up with trends can feel like a never-ending challenge, and it’s even more difficult when it comes to technology, an industry that never stops evolving. That’s why it’s so important to get ahead of the curve, especially as a website design company. Web designers are expected to be the source of knowledge when clients are trying to grow their business through their website.
As a website design company we’re always striving to stay ahead of the curve. Here are our favorite web design trends for 2023 and 2024.
Voice search capabilities and interactions are something most of us are familiar with. From Alexa to Siri, many of us have asked our phones to answer a question when our hands are full. The integration of this capability, specifically known as voice user interface (VUI), is expected to take over the web design world. Websites would then have the ability to respond to voice commands the same way that Siri does. Our opinion on this web design trend of 2023 and 2024? We don’t think it’s necessary to add to your website, especially if your target customers are of an older demographic. Since Alexa and Siri already exist to solve this problem, so that your website does not also need to.
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are a combination of web applications and mobile applications. PWAs offer the benefits of an App in the form of a website, allowing users to access your website offline and receive push notifications. We ranked it lower on our list because it is a very pricey feature. PWAs are complex to build and therefore expensive. While their benefits may be great, we don’t consider them necessary. You can still operate a user-friendly website without offering offline operation.
Organization and usability are two web design trends that will never go out of style. A grid layout is a handy way to showcase your services or products in an organized manner, similar to how Whitehall Vineyard organizes their web pages below. While grid layouts are timeless, we ranked them lower on this list because they aren’t as innovative and engaging as other current trends.
As web designers, the design of the homepage is one of the most important aspects of a website because it’s the first experience customers will have with your business. Featuring a video on your homepage can pique a user’s interest and keep them from clicking off of your site. Brands like Nike and Peloton, as pictured below, do this because it catches users’ attention and offers visual interest, while also teaching users more about their products. Whether you include an animated video or a video background to add movement to the page, this is a beneficial web design trend to follow. The only potential drawback is that large videos can sometimes slow down the website.
Those single-colored, flat web designs aren’t engaging visitors anymore. Many companies opt for images and interactive videos on their homepages. Since not everyone has high-quality images to share on their websites, colorful gradients are a popular alternative. Colorful gradients add depth to your homepage as users scroll, making it visually appealing, as Spotify does below. This is a great web design trend for companies that don’t have engaging animations or photos.
Handmade graphics and illustrations are a 2023 web design trend we’ve really enjoyed seeing. We’re used to hand-drawn graphics on social media, so why not use them to your advantage on your website? This style is gaining in popularity because of its ability to make a website stand out and showcase its individuality. Oatly’s website (pictured below) is a quintessential example of this. They use illustrations throughout their website to keep users engaged, while also relaying messages in a creative way. We recommend these advanced designs to an extent as long as they do not make the website clunky and over the top to the visitor, distracting them from the primary content and call to action. If your business’s branding could align with handmade graphics, then we highly recommend following this trend.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a popular topic disrupting industries, especially the web design industry. Therefore, it’s vital to keep up with how businesses are using AI to their advantage. One tactic that AI has supplied web designers with (that we love) is AI chatbots. You’re most likely familiar with Live Chats, where customers can ask questions in real time on a website and get a response within minutes from a representative. An AI chatbot removes the need for a customer service representative to be near their computer. This can be life-changing for smaller businesses that don’t have customer service teams to answer questions all day. AI chatbots can benefit businesses from all industries because of their ability to work 24/7. You can see how Sephora does this below by not only offering customer service help but beauty recommendations as well.
With video content taking over marketing strategies and social media, it’s no surprise that users prefer GIFs and animation rather than static content. Animation is a fun, simple way to keep your readers engaged on your website while also giving your web pages personality. A better user experience can boost your ranking on Google, so there are pros all around! Check out how Coca-Cola uses animation on its homepage below.
Our #1 web design trend for 2023 goes to web accessibility. Web accessibility is a trend that will never go out of style. Our world is constantly evolving, meaning that people’s needs are too. In order for your website and business to succeed, you need to offer an online platform that is accessible to everyone. Your website should provide customers the option to change the contrast of the text and add video captions, while also including keyboard navigation features for users, for instance. You can try this trend out by using an accessibility widget on your WordPress website. Below is an example in which we added this feature to Community Teamwork’s website:
Your website is a reflection of your organization. Therefore, ensure that your business is coming across as active, modern and updated on the latest trends based on your website. Achieve this by implementing some of the latest web design trends onto your website.
