Chamber & MBAE Submit Comments for BPS Superintendent Search

April 11, 2022

The Chamber and the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education submitted a letter on behalf of employers across the city and, indeed, the region who have a vested interest in critical and vast improvements in student opportunities and outcomes at the Boston Public Schools (BPS). BPS students are our future corporate, government, community and philanthropic leaders. Their success is our collective success. Their readiness for college and career in a 21st century economy is paramount.

Improving BPS schools and curricula will require a bold and transformative leader with an unwavering commitment, first and foremost, to educational excellence. Boston needs a superintendent that will build a culture of high expectations for all and organize systems around the recognition that every student can achieve if provided with the right support structure.

As you undertake your search for the right candidate, we offer the following recommendations:

  • Regardless of their postsecondary goals, all students need a solid base of math, reading, and applied skills to succeed in today’s economy. To that end, the next Superintendent must commit to:
    • Implementing the MassCore course of study citywide as the minimum requirement for a diploma; and
    • Ensuring every school is teaching the state standards, supporting annual statewide assessments that measure progress toward those learning goals, and providing every student with the support they need to successfully meet the standards.
  • Today, nearly every good job that offers opportunity for upward economic mobility requires a career certificate or college degree. Every high school in BPS must offer college and career pathway programs, including Early College and Innovation Pathways, that allow students to earn college credits, credentials, and career experience and exposure.
  • The next Superintendent must hire a dedicated and experienced school facilities manager who can develop and execute a feasible strategy to upgrade school buildings and close buildings that are no longer needed.
  • The Superintendent should engage directly with the employer community in true partnership to:
    • Embrace the value that employers can provide to BPS and embrace their willingness to partner and support student learning; and,
    • Partner with employers to understand the skills that employers need, particularly in industries with a high demand for talent, and incorporating those skills into the BPS curriculum.
  • There should be a higher prioritization of career vocational technical education (CVTE):
    • Madison Park should be a world class CVTE school, and the next superintendent should prioritize the students, teachers, and facilities of Madison Park. The superintendent must be willing to commit to the time, resources, and high standards and expectations necessary to improve Madison Park. This is crucial for the district, the community, and, most importantly, the students who attend the school.
  • There must be an intentional commitment to closing achievement gaps and embracing accountability and transparency on the district’s performance on this overarching goal:
    • The most important task for the next superintendent is to close achievement gaps and improve graduation rates, in a real way.
    • Accountability is key for all aspects of school district management, and the superintendent must be willing to hold the district, its administration, and teachers accountable. This includes transparency regarding student performance, the impact of funding, and strategies for the district to improve performance.

Our two organizations and the employers we represent stand ready to support you and the superintendent to bring about transformative change. The work ahead is challenging, but success is achievable if we work together for the benefit of BPS students. We look forward to working with you in the months and years ahead.
