Established in 2005, the Boston Debate League prepares young people for college, career, and engagement with the world by integrating debate-inspired learning both inside and outside the classroom. Through its core programs, Boston Debate fosters critical thinking, student agency, and leadership among hundreds of Boston Public School students each year.
This year, we’re proud to celebrate our 20th anniversary — a major milestone that reflects two decades of empowering students through debate. Since our founding, we’ve grown from a small volunteer-led effort to a citywide movement reaching thousands of students each year. It’s a moment to honor our impact and look ahead to what’s next.
Boston Debate’s After-School Debate program partners with schools and teacher-coaches to build and grow debate teams, organize city-wide tournaments, host summer debate camps, and offer leadership development opportunities. Additionally, the Debate-Inspired Classrooms program equips educators with debate-based teaching strategies that transform traditional classrooms into dynamic spaces where students take the lead in their learning. The Resolved Program, meanwhile, focuses on engaging and empowering Black and Latino young men in middle and high school through policy debate, mentorship, and community-building.
What sets our organization apart is the scale and impact of our debate programming in Greater Boston. Each year, we engage 5,000 students through partnerships with over 40 middle and high schools, working closely with 350 teachers and 500 volunteers. But what truly stands out is the long-term impact: 95% of students who regularly participate in debate graduate high school in four years. We’re helping them build confidence, critical thinking skills, and a pathway to academic and career success.
We’re not just teaching students how to debate — we are preparing Greater Boston’s next generation of critical thinkers and leaders. That combination of reach and results is what makes our work unique. Learn more about Boston Debate League at bostondebate.org.
