Join us for a virtual WebEx call with Michelle Williams, Dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Join our WebEx call to learn more about efforts to support front line workers and, more broadly, issues of public health during the COVID-19 outbreak and how employers can effectively deal with employee issues that arise. Michelle Williams, ScD, Dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, is the featured speaker and will discuss efforts to ensure the overall wellness of all health care professionals like the newly launched Health and Wellness for All Program, a collaboration between the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Thrive Global. She will offer advice on how to apply these supports to your own workforce and self, regardless of sector.  

Dean Williams will also be joined by Chairman Jeffrey Sánchez and Representative Jon Santiago for Q&A.

Michelle A. Williams, SM ’88, ScD ’91, is Dean of the Faculty, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Angelopoulos Professor in Public Health and International Development, a joint faculty appointment at the Harvard Chan School and Harvard Kennedy School. She is an internationally renowned epidemiologist and public health scientist, an award-winning educator, and a widely recognized academic leader. Prior to becoming Dean, she was Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard Chan School and Program Leader of the Population Health and Health Disparities Research Programs at Harvard’s Clinical and Translational Sciences Center. Dean Williams previously had a distinguished career at the University of Washington School of Public Health. Her scientific work places special emphasis in the areas of reproductive, perinatal, pediatric, and molecular epidemiology. Dean Williams has published over 450 scientific articles. She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2016. The Dean has a master’s in civil engineering from Tufts University and master’s and doctoral degrees in epidemiology from the Harvard Chan School.

Born in the Washington Heights section of New York City, Jeffrey Sánchez was raised in the Mission Main Housing Projects in Boston. He proudly represented his community in the Massachusetts House of Representatives for 16 years where he has been lauded as a national leader in healthcare reform, LGBTQ+ rights, housing and infrastructure, gun laws, violence prevention, prescription drug practices and reform, criminal justice reform, the environment and youth empowerment. He finished his last term serving as the House’s Chief Budget/Legislative writer and negotiator, Chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means where he composed and managed a budget process of over $45 Billion while simultaneously working on critical laws. He also served as Chairman of the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing and Public Health. Chairman Sánchez has been a leader in health care reform for over 20 years. In 2006, he worked to pass landmark legislation which affirmed health care as a right in Massachusetts. Since then, he has crafted laws that support and enable the Life Sciences industry to grow and thrive. He worked to establish a statewide health care cost benchmark and the Health Policy Commision while working to protect and ensure 98% of the state’s population has health insurance to this day. He authored and successfully ushered into law comprehensive legislation to close the racial health disparities gap, address the crisis in compounding pharmacy practice, and improve school nutrition programs. He attended Roxbury Community College and received his B.A. in Legal Education from UMASS/Boston. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is on the faculty as a Lecturer in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He is also the Principal of Sánchez Strategies and Senior Advisor at Rasky Partners focusing on strategic advising, political consulting, impact leadership, health care policy and finance, communications and government relations and crisis communication. He is a member of Governor Charlie Baker’s Latino Advisory Commission, and serves on numerous boards of directors including the National Association of Latino Elected Officials, The Community Builders and the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Care. He recently served as the designee of the Speaker of the House on the University of Massachusetts/Boston Chancellor Search Committee and is an Advisory Board and Fellow Selection Committee member of the Rappaport Institute at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He currently lives in Jamaica Plain with his wife, Brenda, and two daughters. He enjoys cooking and Classical Salsa (music), not the sauce.

Jon Santiago, MD, MPH is the Massachusetts State Representative for the 9th Suffolk District (Boston) and an emergency room physician at Boston Medical Center. A lifelong public servant, Representative Santiago is a former Peace Corps Volunteer and continues to serve as a captain in the Army Reserve. Prior to completing medical school at Yale University, he spent five years abroad working in community organizing and public health. His current policy and clinical interests are focused on improving quality and access to care for underserved communities. A big believer in grassroots organizing, Representative Santiago knocked on nearly 9,000 doors to defeat an almost 40-year incumbent. His experiences in the ER and public health give him a unique experience on healthcare issues and he currently serves on the Healthcare Financing and Public Health committees. Representative Santiago has prioritized addressing the opioid epidemic, including organizing a series of Opioid Epidemic Town Halls, raising awareness through media, and writing an op-ed in the Boston Globe describing the epicenter of the state’s opioid epidemic which sits in his district. The Boston Globe named him one of the top 5 new legislators to watch.
