5 Questions Every Boston Business Should Ask Before Hiring Video Production

July 29, 2026 Tavares Beverly, Founder & CEO, Beverly Boy Productions

Video has become one of the most powerful tools available to modern businesses. Whether you’re recruiting talent, communicating with employees, launching a new product, supporting a fundraising campaign, or strengthening your brand, video often plays a central role in how organizations connect with their audiences.

Yet many companies focus their attention on cameras, equipment, or production costs before asking the questions that truly determine whether a project will succeed.

After more than two decades working with organizations ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies, I’ve found that successful video projects rarely come down to the equipment used. They succeed because the right questions were asked before production ever began.

Here are five questions every Boston business should ask before hiring a video production partner.

1. What Business Problem Are We Trying to Solve?

One of the most common mistakes organizations make is starting with the deliverable instead of the objective.

“We need a video” is not a business goal.

The real questions are:

  • Are we trying to attract new customers?
  • Recruit employees?
  • Increase event attendance?
  • Improve internal communication?
  • Raise awareness of a new initiative?

When business objectives are clearly defined from the start, every decision that follows becomes easier. The messaging becomes sharper, the creative direction becomes more focused, and success becomes measurable.

The strongest video projects are not production-driven. They are objective-driven.

2. Who Is the Audience, and What Action Do We Want Them to Take?

Many businesses attempt to create content that speaks to everyone. In practice, that usually means the message resonates with no one.

A recruitment video for software engineers should look very different from a customer testimonial. A fundraising video should differ significantly from an internal training piece.

Before hiring a production company, organizations should clearly identify:

  • Who will be watching?
  • What challenges or concerns do they have?
  • What action should they take after watching?

The clearer the audience, the more effective the final product will be.

3. Does the Production Team Understand Our Industry and Organization?

Every organization has a story to tell. The challenge is finding a team capable of uncovering and communicating that story effectively.

Technical production skills matter, but so does business understanding.

A production partner should spend time learning about your organization, your stakeholders, and your goals. The best teams ask thoughtful questions, challenge assumptions, and help shape strategy rather than simply showing up with cameras.

Organizations should look for partners who demonstrate curiosity, preparation, and a genuine desire to understand the business behind the project.

 4. What Happens Before the Cameras Start Rolling?

Many people assume production day is the most important part of a project.

In reality, pre-production is where success is often determined.

This stage includes:

  • Strategy development
  • Messaging
  • Interview preparation
  • Scheduling
  • Location planning
  • Creative direction
  • Risk management

When pre-production is rushed, production becomes stressful and inefficient. When pre-production is handled properly, filming tends to run smoothly and produce stronger results.

The quality of a production company’s planning process often tells you more about the final outcome than the equipment they use.

5. How Will We Measure Success?

Perhaps the most overlooked question is the simplest one:

How will we know whether this project worked?

The answer will vary depending on the objective.

Success may be measured by:

  • Increased sales inquiries
  • Improved recruiting outcomes
  • Event registrations
  • Employee engagement
  • Website traffic
  • Brand awareness

Without a clear definition of success, even a beautifully produced video can fall short of delivering business value.

Organizations should establish measurable outcomes before production begins and ensure their production partner understands those goals.

Final Thoughts

Boston has long been recognized as a hub for innovation, education, healthcare, technology, and entrepreneurship. As organizations compete for talent, customers, investment, and attention, the ability to communicate clearly has become more important than ever.

Video can be a powerful business tool, but only when it is approached strategically.

The most successful organizations don’t begin by asking which camera to use or how many days production will take. They begin by asking better questions.

And in many cases, those questions determine the outcome long before the first frame is captured.
