Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history—the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their emancipation, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Recognized as the oldest nationally observed commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is a day of reflection, celebration, and community. There are many events in Boston and throughout the Commonwealth commemorating Juneteenth, and we invite you to join in events that celebrate freedom, history, and culture. Here are some Juneteenth events in the Greater Boston community:
Enjoy the historically rich neighborhood of Hyde Park while attending the fourth annual Juneteenth Joy celebration on Saturday, June 15 at the Francis Martini Shell. This joyful event welcomes the community to an afternoon of performances, vendors, exhibits, and speakers centered around this year’s theme: Focus on Freedom. Take part in a food tasting, participate in dance sessions, shop local artisans, and hear from local leaders.

Gather with friends and family at Franklin Park on Saturday, June 15, for the Roxbury Homecoming Juneteenth Celebration. Festivities will include picnics, barbecues, music, and dancing. The Shattuck Picnic Grove and the expansive park grounds will be buzzing with activities, making it a perfect occasion to relax, connect, and celebrate the spirit of Juneteenth in one of Boston’s historic neighborhoods.

The Embrace Ideas Festival is an annual celebration dedicated to promoting arts, culture, and public scholarship. Taking place from June 18 – 21, this multi-day event will gather local, state, and national leaders to amplify anti-racism efforts and envision a transformed Boston by 2030. With the theme “Inspiring the Resistance: Building a Culture of Repair for the Origins of our Discontent,” this year’s festival promises to inspire and engage. The festival’s alignment with Juneteenth highlights its commitment to celebrating Black liberation and fostering new traditions of unity and joy.

This parade is an exciting opportunity to reflect, rejoice, and stand together as a community.

Join Northeastern University for a day of insightful dialogue and celebration. The event begins with a hybrid panel discussion titled “Understanding the Reparations Movements,” featuring prominent speakers like Dr. Deborah Jackson, Dr. Ashley Adams, Joseph Feaster ‘75, and Elizabeth Tiblanc. Moderated by Dr. Régine Jean-Charles, this discussion will delve into the history and future of reparations. Following the panel, enjoy an outdoor festival at Centennial Common with local black-owned vendors, musical performances, and delicious offerings from food trucks.

Join 10,000 friends at Franklin Park’s Playstead Field for two days of R&B, funk, soul, hip hop, house, and more performed by nationally acclaimed artists and homegrown talent. BAMS Fest, founded and run by Catherine T. Morris, a 2021 Ten Outstanding Young Leaders honoree, is designed to support Black imagination by amplifying and creating opportunities for Boston’s Black and Brown artists, creatives, and culture makers. The event will be headlined by multi-Grammy-nominated rapper, Rapsody, and acclaimed singer-songwriter, BJ the Chicago Kid. In addition to main stage performances, the festival includes “Rep Your City,” a visual art exhibition, a Vendor Village showcasing local Black-owned businesses, and the chance to learn Afro-diasporic dance styles from local Black choreographers. Don’t miss Soul Food Row, where food trucks will dish out international fare.
