GivingTuesday was created back in 2012 around a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. It has since grown into an incredible global movement that inspires radical generosity, i.e. the concept that the suffering of others should be as intolerable to us as our own suffering.
This year, GivingTuesday takes place on December 2, and while we encourage our members to stay involved far beyond that day, it is the perfect opportunity to take stock of the local organizations where you could give your time and talents to make a positive impact in our community.
To help get you started, we’ve compiled some non-profits with volunteer opportunities who would welcome your support:
As the first female-founded animal welfare organization in Massachusetts, in operation since 1889, the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Boston is committed to keeping animals safe and in healthy homes. ARL often needs volunteers for a variety of tasks including:
Breaktime works to combat youth homelessness in Boston by offering paid job training, transitional employment, housing support, and long-term career pathways. Whether you’re looking to lend a few hours a month or get deeply involved, volunteering with Breaktime is a direct way to create positive, lasting change for young adults experiencing housing insecurity in Greater Boston. How you can support:
Samaritans provides life-saving suicide prevention services throughout Massachusetts, including a suicide hotline with trained professionals. Since their founding in 1974, they’ve trained more than 6,500 volunteers, provided suicide prevention workshops to 180,000 people, and supported 17,000 suicide loss survivors in their grief journeys. There are many meaningful ways for you to get involved with Samaritans:
Every Monday through Saturday, Women’s Lunch Place (WLP), provides healthy meals, free medical care, hygienic essentials, and one-on-one assistance through their daytime shelter and advocacy center in Boston dedicated to helping women experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. WLP delivers services to more than 2,300 women each year and supports guests who fall through the cracks of social welfare and healthcare systems. Unfortunately, the demand for their services is only increasing. There are many ways you can support Women’s Lunch Place, including:
Friends of Boston’s Homeless, founded in 1987, empowers people to move out of homelessness for good. Through programs ranging from emergency services to permanent housing, they help hundreds each year transition into safe, dignified homes and connect to the resources they need to rebuild their lives. Ways to support:
Of course, this list only scratches the surface of the many incredible organizations in the Greater Boston area who are doing amazing and valuable work. To explore more non-profits you can get involved in, visit our directory.
We hope this inspires you to join the movement this #GivingTuesday and discover how you can make a difference in Greater Boston. For more information, head to www.givingtuesday.org.
