– Speaker DeLeo
Speaker Robert DeLeo opened his remarks to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce’s Government Affairs Forum talking about the long and productive partnership between his office and the Chamber on important issues benefiting the Commonwealth’s economy and residents.
Acknowledging that the following day was the National Day Without A Woman, Speaker DeLeo announced that the House will take up the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act after developing legislation that will ensure the health and safety of pregnant workers while addressing the issues raised by employers.
Speaker DeLeo then spoke about his commitment to improving services directed toward early childhood education and care and his proposal to double the state’s investment in the Early Childhood Health Grants. The Chamber is a supportive partner in these efforts with Speaker DeLeo and sees early childhood education and care as a workforce development issue and an imperative for the business community.
Turning to statewide economic development and the need to support new companies across Massachusetts, Speaker DeLeo announced that the House will fund a $2 million pilot program that will subsidize the cost for companies and start-ups that use University of Massachusetts facilities and labs. This program will help build our workforce and develop new companies across the state and is one outcome of the Bay State Business Link, a partnership between the speaker’s office and the Chamber designed to spur economic development across the state.
