Partnership Between Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Boston Public Schools Brings Region’s Business Leaders to the Classroom
Boston, MA—The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Boston Public Schools (BPS) celebrate the implementation of AP Business with Personal Finance in five BPS classrooms this fall, bringing educators and business leaders together to equip students with practical financial knowledge and experiences that connect classroom learning with the business community.
The course marks the latest milestone in the Chamber Foundation and BPS’ partnership to expand financial literacy education and connect students with professionals across Greater Boston’s business community. Through the partnership, leaders from businesses including Bank of America, MFS Investment Management, Santander Bank, and TD Bank, volunteer alongside BPS educators to help students see how financial and business concepts apply beyond the classroom and explore the skills they will use throughout their personal and professional lives. Volunteers will lead lessons or activities focused on topics including budgeting for real life, managing your money, and understanding your first paycheck.
This fall, BPS became one of the first school districts to offer College Board’s new AP Business with Personal Finance course. This school year, the course is taught at Boston International Newcomers Academy, Boston Latin School, Brighton High School, O’Bryant School of Math & Science, and Tech Boston Academy with 211 students enrolled. Developed in collaboration with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the business community, the curriculum covers entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, accounting and management through real-world business applications, case studies and project-based learning.
“Our ongoing partnership with Boston Public Schools is about connecting classroom learning with the real-world experiences and perspectives of Greater Boston’s business community,” said James E. Rooney, President & CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. “We’re proud to see this partnership come to life in BPS classrooms where students are gaining practical financial knowledge from business leader experts, preparing them for the skills they need for future careers and long-term professional success.”
Through this partnership with the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Boston Public Schools, and local businesses, we are giving students the practical skills and strong foundation to make sound financial decisions and prepare for their future,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “We thank these partners for investing in our students and their future success.”
“In our new AP Business with Personal Finance course, we are giving students access to high-quality learning experiences that will help them build practical skills to prepare for the financial decisions they face during and after high school,” said Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper. “In collaboration with the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Foundation, we are developing a shared vision for financial literacy across grades K-12, strengthening connections between classroom learning and the financial services sector, and giving students opportunities to learn directly from business leaders. We are grateful to these partners as they help our students prepare for their futures.”
“Expanding access to financial education is one of the ways we’re helping young people build a strong foundation for economic opportunity,” said Miceal Chamberlain, President, Bank of America Massachusetts and Chair of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. “It’s a commitment Bank of America has made for many years, and as Chamber Board Chair, I’m proud to see businesses across our region bringing their knowledge and experience to this work.”
On September 28, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce was also one of eight chambers recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as a Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce Champion. The recognition highlights the Chamber’s partnership with College Board and the U.S. Chamber to advance AP Business with Personal Finance in high schools, helping students build the skills they need to thrive in their careers and contribute to a strong workforce for the future.
The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce is recognized alongside the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Longview Chamber of Commerce, Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, Vegas Chamber of Commerce, Greater Des Moines Partnership, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and Orange County Business Council.
