Chamber member, the United States Army will be taking over the city April 8-15 for “Army Week Boston,” a showcase of the incredible opportunities – particularly career opportunities – available in the U.S. Army. We caught up with Captain Starlet Baker, Commander for the Boston Recruiting Company with the U.S. Army for a quick Q&A about her path and how she’s getting ready for their special event.
Q. What was your path to the Army and to Boston?
A. I originally enlisted in the Illinois National Guard as a Cable and Wire Systems Installer in 1999. I needed more than the National Guard could offer, so I joined active duty with the U.S. Army, and it was the best decision I ever made! I earned my commission as an Army Officer from Western Illinois University with a BA in Philosophy and a minor in Pre-Law. I’ve been stationed at Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Huachuca, Arizona; Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; Fort Rucker, Alabama; Fort Jackson, South Carolina; and Fort Drum, New York to name a few. I’ve been deployed to Iraq twice and managed other missions in over 15 different countries, to include Australia, Japan, Cameroon, Djibouti, Nigeria, Niger, and so many more!
Q. As a world traveler, what makes Boston standout on your list?
A. The Army has allowed me to see the world, and Boston has definitely not disappointed in keeping life interesting for my family and I with experiencing new things. The rich history of this area is certainly one of the more important motivators for taking advantage of living and working in the greater Boston area. The people of Boston are also wonderful to meet and work with. I’ve enjoyed using the Chamber to build a stronger network and make connections in the business community.
Q. What do we need to know about Army Week, and how can the business community get involved?
A. There are some really exciting events planned, and we’ll be bringing in the Army’s top talent across industries to showcase the many different career paths available. Some highlights for the week include:

Captain Starlet E. Baker enlisted into the Illinois National Guard in 1999 as a 31L, Cable Systems Installer-Maintainer. Two years later, she made the transition to active duty and arrived to her first duty station, Fort Hood, Texas. Assigned to the 57th Signal Battalion, 3rd Signal Brigade, she deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In August 2005, she relocated to Fort Huachuca, Arizona and was assigned to 87th Signal Battalion, 11th Signal Brigade; she once again deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom for 15 months. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Western Illinois University in 2012, CPT Baker returned to the active Army. Meet her and learn more at Army Week Boston!
