Get to Know an MBE

Join us for the first Behind the Scenes of an MBE featuring UHM Properties and Little Cocoa Bean Co.! This in-person event will give buyers and diverse businesses a behind the scenes look at the challenges MBEs face and the advantages of working with them. Attendees will have the opportunity to have an open dialogue with CEO Kevin Bynoe and Founder Tracy Skelly on how they grew their businesses into the successes that they are today.

ABOUT THE BUSINESSES

UHM Properties
When the Guscott brothers (Kenneth, Cecil, and George) decided to retire from residential property management in 2002, the founders of Long Bay Management Company (LBMC) sought to continue the LBMC legacy of providing safe, decent, affordable housing in the community. Eight senior staff members, each with over 10 years of service at LBMC, purchased the LBMC residential portfolio. The new partners formed United Housing Management (UHM) that opened for business on January 1, 2003.
Today, UHM Properties manages over 1,400 housing units. They have generated an extraordinary track record for property management services, delivering profitability for owners and growing the local economy of our managed communities – all while providing quality service to our residents.

Little Cocoa Bean Co.
Little Cocoa Bean Co.’s got all your feeding needs covered – and that’s just the beginning. They create culturally diverse, ready-made, fresh and healthy baby and toddler food for the next generation of parents. Their meals are served in a chic, baby-friendly café setting that’s every parent’s dream eater.

When Tracy Skelly had her first child in 2019, she found that she was unable to find baby foods with the culturally diverse flavors and nutrient content that she sought for her daughter. First foods, those that are introduced to babies in the first few months of life are ‘heritage foods’ (which) connect cultural beliefs, traditions, and what is available locally. For Tracy, that meant the inclusion of foods in the tradition of the African Diaspora, containing ingredients such as collards, chayote, papaya and tamarind. Despite being a busy working mom, Tracy took matters into her own hands and began to experiment with making her own baby food. She found that by incorporating the diverse, fresh veggies, fruits and spices she was able to create baby food products that were superior in terms of nutritional content and more culturally relevant. Further, Tracy is passionate about combating childhood hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity as well as reducing the racial inequities associated with poor health outcomes. Nutrition, particularly that which occurs during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, is an important predictor of future child health and development.

The combined success of her food experimentation and desire to do more to promote child health in her community, led to the founding of the Little Cocoa Bean Co. in late 2019. Little Cocoa Bean Co. is a baby care and feeding business that aims to combat childhood hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity. They produce baby food inspired by global favorites with ingredients from around the world and they manufacture kits to help parents prepare their own fresh baby food at home.
