An Overview of Labor Laws and Changes during COVID-19 Ft. Secretary Rosalin Acosta; Christina Lewis, Goodwin; Bradford Smith, Goodwin

On Tuesday, March 31 the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a WebEx call to learn more about employment law issues related to COVID-19. This discussion will feature Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development, Rosalin Acosta; Christina Lewis, Goodwin; and Bradford Smith, Goodwin. The panelists will educate us on the legal requirements, best practices, and the executive orders and legislative initiatives at both the state and federal level that are affecting workers and organizations during this pandemic.

Rosalin Acosta is the Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In her role, Secretary Acosta manages the Commonwealth’s workforce development and labor departments to ensure that workers, employers, and the unemployed have the tools, training, and safety resources needed to succeed in the Massachusetts economy. Secretary Acosta also Chairs the Workforce Skills Cabinet alongside the Secretary of Education and the Secretary of Housing and Economic Development. Prior to joining the Baker-Polito Administration, she was a widely respected financial and banking service professional with over thirty years of experience in Greater Boston financial institutions. Secretary Acosta was a Director and Planning Committee Member of the Merrimack Valley Workforce Investment Board and was appointed a Northern Essex Community College Trustee by Governor Baker. She has been named one of Boston’s Most Influential Women by the Women of Harvard Club and El Planeta’s Top 100 Most Influential Hispanics in Massachusetts. She has also been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA). Born in Cuba, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University in Connecticut where she was a member of the Women’s Varsity Ice Hockey Team. She is the proud mother of five children.

Christina Lewis is a partner in Goodwin’s Employment practice, representing employers in all facets of their relationships with employees and across a range of industries. Ms. Lewis helps clients negotiate and draft employment agreements, employment policies, affirmative action plans and separation agreements. She also advises on employment issues including employee discipline, leaves of absences, terminations, internal investigations, wage-and-hour compliance, privacy issues and reductions-in-force. In addition, Ms. Lewis is a seasoned employment litigator, having managed dozens of significant cases involving some of the most difficult issues facing employers today. Ms. Lewis has successfully defended employers in cases involving wage-and-hour class action claims, non-compete/non-solicitation and trade secret litigation, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), unfair labor practices, and affirmative action, among others. She also handles discrimination, harassment and wrongful termination cases nationwide, in both state and federal court and in state and federal agencies. Additionally, Ms. Lewis conducts seminars and training programs on a variety of employment topics, including discrimination prevention, and is a certified trainer in both fair employment practices and sexual harassment prevention by the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD). Prior to joining Goodwin, Ms. Lewis was a partner at Hinckley Allen & Snyder LLP, where she was the Vice Chair of the Litigation Practice Group and Practice Group Leader of the Labor & Employment Group

Brad Smith, a partner in the firm’s Employment practice, represents a variety of local, regional and national clients across many industries, including high technology, pharmaceutical, B2B, real estate, utilities, manufacturing, financial services and retail. His practice includes employment discrimination proceedings before state and federal courts and agencies, wrongful discharge litigation, noncompetition and wage-hour/misclassification litigation (including class action litigation), proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, labor arbitrations and actions arising under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. He has prevailed at all stages of litigation, including successfully defending and obtaining injunctive relief, at summary judgment, following trial and on appeal. He counsels clients on employment-related issues such as employee discipline and termination, sexual harassment and other discrimination matters, development of affirmative action programs and personnel policies, compliance with wage-hour and classification regulations, development and enforcement of employee noncompetition and confidentiality agreements, and compliance with miscellaneous state and federal employment laws and regulations. He is the Chapter Editor (MA, RI, NH and ME) for BNA’s 50-States Treatises on Covenants Not To Compete, Duty of Loyalty, Trade Secrets and Tortious Interference.
