Government Affairs Forum

As the 73rd Governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey is focused on making our state an affordable place to live while growing the state’s competitiveness by prioritizing housing, transportation, job training, and childcare. Governor Healey cut taxes for the first time in 20 years, signed the largest housing bill in state history to speed up production and lower costs, with 100,000 new homes already being built, and made record investments in education and transportation.

Before her current role, Governor Healey was elected Massachusetts Attorney General in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. As the People’s Lawyer, she took on the toughest issues facing Massachusetts, including the opioid epidemic, and protected the rights of all residents. In recognition of her achievements, she received a Pinnacle Award from the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Network in 2020.

Press and media should RSVP to Casey Baines.

Maura Healey is the 73rd Governor of Massachusetts. In 2022, she became the first woman elected Governor in state history and the first openly lesbian Governor elected in the country.

Commitments honored; results delivered. In her first two years in office, Governor Healey has led Massachusetts from strength to strength and delivered on her promises to the people of Massachusetts.

She cut taxes for the first time in 20 years, putting money back in the pockets of workers, small businesses, seniors and families. That includes establishing the most generous universal child tax credit in the country.

To fix the high cost of housing, Governor Healey filed and signed the historic $5 billion Affordable Homes Act with nearly 50 policy initiatives to counter rising housing costs caused by high demand and limited supply. Massachusetts can now build more homes, more affordably, and build them faster.

Keeping Massachusetts the best in the nation for K-12 education, Governor Healey expanded access to child care and pre-kindergarten, expanded high-quality reading instruction in the early grades, and created new career and technical pathways in high schools. She increased access to higher education by making state colleges and universities more affordable to working families, community college cost-free, and promoted career apprenticeships for working adults.

Governor Healey lowered health care costs for thousands of working families by expanding eligibility for the affordable ConnectorCare plan. She signed a maternal health bill to improve care for pregnant women, mothers and babies, made prenatal vitamins and breast cancer screenings free, and expanded benefits for veterans through the historic HERO Act.

The MBTA is working. Under Governor Healey’s leadership, the MBTA delivered by removing slow zones, increasing speeds, and getting new cars on the tracks. Commutes are easier with up-to-the-minute updates on the MBTA Go app. Governor Healey also secured billions in federal transportation funding to rebuild the Cape Cod Bridges and develop West-East Rail service. She has proposed a historic $8 billion plan to upgrade roads, bridges and public transportation across the state.

Governor Healey strongly supports Massachusetts global business leadership in cutting-edge industries like climatetech, life sciences, biotech, data centers and AI. She filed and signed the $4 billion Mass Leads Act to invest in Massachusetts’ growth and keep the state’s innovation economy the best in the world.

To protect access to reproductive health care, including abortion, Governor Healey stockpiled mifepristone, signed Executive Orders protecting abortion patients and providers, and made over-the-counter contraception free.

Governor Healey is lowering energy coststhrough her Energy Affordability Agenda, which is delivering $220 million in immediate cost savings and will save Massachusetts residents $6 billion over the next five years.

Healey previously served two terms as Massachusetts Attorney General, first elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. In her role as the People’s Lawyer, she took on the tough issues affecting Massachusetts residents, including the opioid epidemic, climate change, health care costs, and student loan debt. Earlier in her career, Healey was a litigation partner at an international law firm.

Healey grew up the oldest of five siblings in an old New England farmhouse. She and her siblings were raised by their mother, Tracy, who worked as a nurse at the local elementary school. Her stepfather, Edward, was a teacher and local union president. He coached her high school basketball team and instilled a lifelong love of the sport. Healey attended Harvard College, where she captained the basketball team, and then spent two years as the starting point guard on a professional basketball team in Europe.

Governor Healey lives in Arlington, Massachusetts with her partner Joanna Lydgate and their family.
