PUBLIC POLICY
Competing for growth in a changing economy
They create jobs, opportunities, and community while generating resilience and vibrancy that is visible in our Main Streets, laboratories, and office buildings. Massachusetts draws employers because of our talented workforce, but with a more mobile workforce than ever before, a competitive business climate has never been more important to our region.
Three components contribute to the region’s business climate: costs, the ease of doing business, and the relationship between policymakers and businesses. Businesses and employers evaluate these pillars when making decisions about where to expand, start, or invest.
High costs, regulatory burdens, and employer mandates that are hard or impossible to meet create conditions for businesses to fail instead of a foundation for them to succeed. Small businesses and other employers with limited mobility options are at an even greater disadvantage when competing against other businesses that can relocate to or hire remote workers in states with more favorable business conditions.
Policy makers’ relationship with businesses matters, too. In Boston and Massachusetts, we’re fortunate to have civically engaged employers. They are valuable partners in our communities and get involved in solving public policy challenges. Bringing employers to the table and recognizing the contributions they bring to our region creates a positive business climate.
