The Importance of New Energy Generation and Job Creation – An Open Letter to Policymakers in Washington D.C. in Support of Revolution Wind
On behalf of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and our over 1,200 members, I write to offer our support for strengthening New England’s energy grid by adding a variety of new energy generation resources to meet demand and ease cost pressures, including offshore wind projects like Revolution Wind.
Massachusetts has some of the highest energy rates in the nation, and is particularly vulnerable to winter price spikes as demand for natural gas for both heating and electricity generation climbs during cold months. New England stands at the end of the energy pipeline, with few local resources to rely upon to power our homes and businesses. Instead, we often import energy resources through pipelines or transmission lines from other regions to meet our needs. At the same time, many of our local energy generation facilities are aging and a rash of recent power plant retirements puts energy reliability at risk, particularly if energy demand continues to grow in the coming years.
This makes the development of local generation, in combination with upgrades to our transmission capacity, critical from both an energy reliability and affordability standpoint. With some of the best wind resources in the world located just off local waters, offshore wind can provide a vital balance with our other energy resources to curb price spikes and provide baseload generation for an affordable price.
Revolution Wind, a 704MW offshore wind energy project that began generating energy last week, will power over 350,000 homes in New England. Given our shared electric grid with Rhode Island and Connecticut, this generation is important to meet our future energy demand and stabilize energy prices. It also supports a budding offshore wind industry, creating good paying jobs in construction, operations, shipping, and manufacturing. New American made vessels, advanced manufacturing and other jobs to support these facilities can spur new careers for all levels of our workforce.
The Chamber embraces an “all of the above” energy strategy, looking to a wide array of energy resources to power our local economy. Offshore wind, and specific projects like Revolution Wind, are an important part of our energy future. As we embrace new energy intensive industries like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and revitalizing advanced manufacturing, we cannot take any local, reliable sources of energy off the table. Due to be completed this year, Revolution Wind represents a critical new resource to bolster our energy supply.
We hope you will partner with our business community by supporting the completion of Revolution Wind and future offshore wind projects that provide reliability and affordability benefits to New England ratepayers.
