As the oldest son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King, III serves as an ambassador of his parent’s legacy of nonviolent social change. As a high school student he served as a page to Senator Edward Kennedy and would go on to graduate with a major in political science from his father’s alma mater Morehouse College in Atlanta. While at Morehouse, Mr. King was selected by former President Jimmy Cater to serve as part of the United States delegation to The Republic of Congo for participation in protests against apartheid and for the release of freedom fighter and former President Nelson Mandela. Mr. King has traveled to various countries on the African continent and has also spread the message of nonviolent social change in Asia, Europe, India, Australia, Canada, Haiti and other countries around the world. In the state of Georgia, Mr. King served over 700,000 local residents as a member of Fulton County Board of Commissioners. During his tenure, he successfully lobbied for the removal of the confederate flag in Georgia and championed the rights of minority communities to guarantee equal treatment with regard to benefits from the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. He also initiated the King Summer Intern Program to provide employment opportunities for American males with positive adult role models. In 1997, Mr. King was elected as the fourth President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference where he co-sponsored the 40th Anniversary of the historic March on Washington and led the national SCLC Gun Buyback/Stop the Violence and anti-racial profiling campaigns. Following his service with SCLC, Mr. King founded Realizing the Dream which focused on redressing poverty by strategizing with community organizers to ignite investment in the local neighborhoods and foster peaceful coexistence within the U.S. and internationally. In 2008, Mr. King spoke on behalf of former Senator and President Barack Obama at the Democratic National housing, technology and equal justice. As the former President and CEO of the King Center, Martin King merged Realizing the Dream’s program platform into the King Center’s forthcoming renovation of the King Center’s campus and updating of systems to match that of other world class visitor sites. Mr. King also serves on the Board of Directors for the Drum advocacy think tank. In 2011 along with Ambassador Andrew Young and others, Mr. King co-founded BounceTV, the first independently owned, digital multicast network featuring 24/7 programming geared toward African Americans. In 2013, Mr. King served as co-convener of the 50th Anniversary of the historic March on Washington. Mr. King currently serves as a life member of The King Center Board of Directors and continues to devote his life to promoting globa human rights and the eradication of the trip evils of poverty, racism, and war. He and his wife, Arndrea Waters King, are the parents of one daughter, Yolanda Renee King.
