Statement from the Chamber’s President & CEO
“At a time when both people and employers are struggling with high costs, predictable and enforceable rules with our trading partners are more important than ever. That is why we need a renewed United States-Mexico- Canada Agreement (USMCA) to govern our long-term trade relations with our key allies and partners in North America. Instead of arbitrary and volatile tariff decisions, a long-term agreement can give business leaders and consumers confidence in our North American supply chain without unnecessary costs imposed on goods and services vital to the wellbeing of our economy. With over 13 million jobs supported through ongoing trade relations with Canada and Mexico, including $8.8 billion in exports from New England to Canada alone, clear rules in trade remain critically important to our national and international competitiveness. While these agreements are never perfect, the stability they provide overall far outweigh the disagreements in particular, discrete trade circumstances. We urge the United States, Canada, and Mexico to quickly conduct their review of USMCA and renew our stable trade relations as soon as possible.”
