Positioning Boston for Success as the World Arrives

As we prepare to welcome the FIFA World Cup to the region, join us for a hybrid event in partnership with FIFA World Cup Boston 2026 (Boston 26) for a focused conversation on how the world’s largest sporting event will shape the region’s economy and business community. 

With seven World Cup matches set to take place in Boston, this discussion will offer an economic and commercial overview of what it means to host a global tournament of this scale and how businesses of all sizes can begin building their game plan to take advantage of this opportunity

Hear directly from Ron O’Hanley, Chairman and CEO at State Street and Chair of the Boston 26 Honorary Board, as he shares insights on the scope, impact, and legacy of hosting the World Cup. Remarks will be followed by a presentation from Mike Loynd, President, FIFA World Cup™ Boston 2026, who will share essential information for your business to prepare for the event. Chamber President & CEO Jim Rooney will moderate a conversation with Tanisha M. Sullivan, Head of External Engagement & Health Equity Strategy at Sanofi and member of the FIFA World Cup Boston26 Honorary Board, and Mike Loynd to explore how businesses can leverage global exposure, engage new audiences, and position themselves for success on the world stage.

Participants will leave with practical strategies, real-world examples, and a clearer understanding of how to prepare for kickoff.

Mike Loynd, a focused and highly experienced business executive, has spent more than 40 years leading complex, high-profile projects around the world. His career spans senior leadership roles across multiple Olympic Games, major international sporting events, and global organizations Loynd currently serves as President of Boston Soccer 2026, guiding the strategic planning and delivery of the FIFA World Cup 26™ in Boston.

His professional background includes serving as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for Kraft Sports & Entertainment, Managing Partner at Broadstone Group, Chief Operating Officer of the Baku 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, and Deputy COO of the Baku 2015 European Games.

Earlier in his career, Loynd held director-level roles with the London 2012 Olympics and was a founding partner in several pioneering event and security companies supporting Olympic Games from Sydney to Beijing.

For his contributions to the London Games, Mike was awarded the IOC’s Olympic Order. He has also received Presidential Honors from the Republic of Azerbaijan for his leadership of the 2015 Games.

He began my career in Boston’s live events industry, ultimately building several successful companies that helped shape regional event services, venue operations, and guest experience standards.

Ron is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of State Street.

Ron was previously president and chief operating officer of State Street, and before that, president and chief executive officer of State Street Investment Management, the investment management arm of State Street. He joined State Street in 2015.

Prior to State Street, Ron was president of Asset Management & Corporate Services for Fidelity Investments, responsible for Fidelity’s asset management organizations, corporate functions, and enterprise technology. He served at Fidelity from 2010 to 2014.

Before joining Fidelity, Ron served as president and chief executive officer of BNY Mellon Asset Management in Boston. During this time, he also served as vice chairman of Bank of New York Mellon Corporation. Additionally, Ron oversaw all of Bank of New York Mellon’s activities in Asia. Prior to the 2007 merger of Bank of New York and Mellon, he was vice chairman of Mellon Financial Corporation and president and chief executive officer of Mellon Asset Management. He served at Mellon and Bank of New York Mellon from 1997 to 2010.

Prior to Mellon, Ron was with McKinsey & Company from 1986 to 1997 and was elected a partner in 1992. He founded McKinsey’s Investment Management practice and was co-founder of the firm’s North American Personal Financial Services practice. During his tenure with McKinsey, Ron served in the firm’s Boston, New York, and Stockholm offices.

Ron serves on the boards of Unum Corp. (where he chairs the Governance Committee), ABL Space Systems, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and Beth Israel Lahey Health (Vice Chair). He also serves on several industry and not-for-profit boards, including the Institute of International Finance, the U.S.-Kuwait Business Council, the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership, Syracuse University, the Naval War College Foundation, IYRS School of Technology and Trades, the Ireland Funds, FIFA Boston 26, and WBUR.

Ron received his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Syracuse University (Maxwell School) in 1980 and his Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1986.

James E. Rooney is President & CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, the region’s most influential business association.

With Rooney’s commitment and leadership, the Greater Boston Chamber is now the leading convener, voice, and advocate for the region. Strategizing with government leaders, private companies, and public institutions to strengthen the state’s competitiveness, Rooney advances the future of commerce with public policies and legislation that champions dynamic and resilient people, communities, and workplaces.

Before leading the Chamber, Rooney served as executive director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA), overseeing the development and construction of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) while leading the management teams of four MCCA-owned facilities. Prior, Rooney served two years as Chief of Staff to Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, chairing the Mayor’s cabinet to move forward all aspects of city governance.

Rooney started his public career at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), starting as a track laborer and ending as Deputy General Manager. He served one year as the MBTA’s Acting General Manager during a gubernatorial transition. Using his transportation financing expertise, Rooney led one of the nation’s largest transportation projects, the $15 billion “Big Dig” Central Artery highway project, and he served as Chief Financial Officer at the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority.

Rooney serves in leadership positions on several boards of directors, including the Committee of 100 at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Association of Chambers of Commerce Executives (ACCE), Co-Chair of the Madison Park Steering Committee, and Member of the Boston Private Industry Council (PIC). Rooney continues to be recognized for his professional and civic contributions, including being named to the list of 100 Most Influential Bostonians by Boston Magazine numerous times, receiving the City of Boston Lifetime Achievement Award for advocacy of the immigrant community, and he was honored with the PCMA Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the global meetings industry.

Born and raised in South Boston, Rooney attended the prestigious Boston Latin School, where he served as President of his graduating class. He graduated from Harvard College with a bachelor’s degree in economics and attended the Boston University Graduate School of Management.

Tanisha M. Sullivan, J.D., M.B.A., is an award-winning civic, legal, and business leader whose nearly 30-year career has been defined by one throughline: advancing equity and expanding opportunity across communities, industries, and systems. A trusted voice in the life sciences ecosystem, she currently serves as Sanofi’s Head of External Engagement and Health Equity Strategy for the U.S., where she leads the company’s national health equity agenda and oversees executive engagement and government relations across Massachusetts. Her impact has been shaped by experience at global law firms in Boston and New York, as well as a series of senior legal leadership roles at Sanofi, including Associate General Counsel and Legal Head of Manufacturing and Supply for Global Specialty Care and Sanofi US.

A dedicated public servant and civic architect, Ms. Sullivan is widely recognized for designing policy solutions and community-centered initiatives that strengthen institutions and drive lasting change. She served as the inaugural Chief Equity Officer for Boston Public Schools, has been a guest lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Education, and an adjunct instructor at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education. Her civic portfolio includes co-creating the Boston Office of Police Accountability and Transparency; developing the nationally recognized Take the Lead anti-racism initiative; and co-launching GBH’s The State of Race public affairs series. After four transformative terms as President of the NAACP Boston Branch, she now leads the NAACP New England Area Conference, representing five states and serves on the National Board of Trustees.

A non-partisan leader trusted across administrations, Ms. Sullivan has advised two Massachusetts Governors and currently chairs Governor Maura Healey’s Advisory Council on Black Empowerment. She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy at Boston College Law School and has contributed to multiple city and state public health task forces. A sought-after media commentator and the recipient of numerous civic and industry distinctions, including the BBJ Power 50, Boston Magazine’s Most Influential Bostonians, and BLOC’s 100 Most Impactful Leaders in BioPharma, Ms. Sullivan is a graduate of the University of Virginia and Boston College Law School and holds an MBA from the Boston College Carroll School of Management, along with executive leadership credentials from Harvard Business School.
