Transportation First and AI Advantage: Leading the Commonwealth Forward
Transportation First is a Chamber initiative to address the transportation crisis in Massachusetts. Creating a world class transportation system requires policymakers, employers, and residents to recognize that transportation is a public good and should be treated as such urgently. By putting transportation first, the Commonwealth will be in a better position to solve other policy issues which are barriers to the region’s continued growth and prosperity like housing, climate decarbonization and adaption, economic development, economic opportunity, and education access.
The moment calls for a long-term and sustainable mobility funding plan, systemic reform, and a vision for strategic super-investments. This will result in business and job growth across the Commonwealth, timelier and more affordable commutes, more accessible and equitable educational opportunities, lower emissions, livable and more affordable neighborhoods, and inclusive economic development.
The Transportation First series will offer a platform to discuss the urgent crisis Greater Boston faces by bringing in experts in the field as well as changemakers to discuss the issues and talk about what the solutions for the future are.
These events will be free of charge and open to members and non-members.
The Transportation First launch event will focus on the current state and future plans of the regional transit systems and feature insights from Monica G. Tibbits-Nutt, Secretary and CEO of the Massachusetts Department Transportation (MassDOT), and Phillip Eng, General Manager and CEO of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

The AI Advantage series will offer a platform to discuss the urgent crisis Greater Boston faces by bringing in leading experts in the field to discuss this revolution and talk about what the future of technology means for the business community and our region. This series will enhance awareness among the audience. The Chamber is uniquely positioned to unite leaders from all communities and industries, leveraging our relationships to convene the business community on this critical issue affecting employees and employers daily.
During this event, McKinsey & Company will present their “State of AI” report, set to be released in mid-November. Additionally, Jason Snyder, the Secretary of Technology Services & Security for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, will discuss the administration’s goals for leading the AI revolution. Followed by a conversation on how the business community is adopting AI tools.
As generative AI adoption accelerates, survey respondents report measurable benefits and increased mitigation of the risk of inaccuracy. A small group of high performers lead the way, according to McKinsey’s report on the state of AI in early 2024.
As the new chairman of the Chamber’s board of directors, Thomas is thinking about how this high-cost region stacks up against others across the country. One of Thomas’s personal projects as Chamber chairman is the creation of a “future of tech” committee in which executives will discuss the best approaches to state policies related to that field that the chamber should endorse.
