Check out highlights from this month’s Massachusetts Jobs Update:
- The state added 7,900 jobs in October. This follows a revised September employment gain of 2,700, which is 2,400 jobs fewer than was initially reported. Massachusetts’ year-over-year (October ’11 – October ’12) job growth total is 43,000 and year-to-date job growth total is 43,300.
- The state’s October unemployment rate ticked up by one-tenth of a point to 6.6%, marking the state’s fourth consecutive monthly rate increase. Massachusetts’ rate is at its highest point since February 2012 but continues to be well below the U.S. rate of 7.9%.
- Eight of 12 regions added jobs in October, led by the addition of 4,500 jobs in the Greater Boston region. Ten of 12 regions added jobs year-over-year with the largest percentage gains seen in the South Coast, Greater Boston, and North Shore regions, respectively.
- The Professional & Business Services and Construction sectors posted the largest monthly private sector job gains (+2,400 jobs each) at the state level in October, followed by Financial Activities (+1,700), and Education & Health Services (+1,300).
